Neuropsychology
Neuropsychology is a specialty within professional psychology that is concerned with the brain and its effect on the way one functions or one's behavior. A neuropsychologist uses various assessment techniques and and psychological tests to identify learning disorders and other mental or social health problems, determine the severity of the problem, and provide possible treatment.
A neuropsychologist is a licensed psychologist with expertise in understanding the impact of damaged or abnormally developed brain structures and systems on an individual's functioning. In particular, neuropsychologists assess the impact of neurological, medical, neurodevelopmental, learning, and psychiatric conditions on educational, occupational, and/or interpersonal functioning. Neuropsychologists complete a doctoral program in professional psychology, a one year predoctoral internship, and a two year post-doctoral fellowship that consists of study and training in the practice of neuropsychology as well as related neurosciences.
Neuropsychological exams can confirm diagnoses, but they can also be used to guide a child's rehabilitation or to refer the child to other specialists. Your child may benefit from a neuropsychological evaluation if they suffer from:
*Traumatic brain injury
*Stroke
*Medical illness
*Seizures
*Toxic chemicals or substance abuse
*Other psychiatric disorders
